Newport Government

About our Town Government

The Town has an 'Elected Council and Manager' form of government. The regular meeting of the Newport Town Council has been changed from 7:30 to 6:00 pm starting in January 2009

There are five Council persons and a Mayor. Each Council person is elected for a four year staggered term and the Mayor is elected for four years. The Manager serves at the pleasure of the Council. There are two appointed boards to conduct the planning and growth of the town.

The Planning Board consists of, but is not limited to, three members that reside within the corporate limits and three members that reside in the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the town.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment consists of three members that reside within the corporate limits and two members that reside in the extraterritorial jurisdiction of the town.

The in-town members are appointed by the Town Council and the out-of-town members are appointed by the County Board of Commissioners.

The Town Council and Mayor encourage all Newport residents to keep in touch with planned activities and proposed rule changes. A good way to know what is going on is by reading through previous "Minutes of Meetings' and by staying informed on the 'Agendas' of future meetings. Or fill out a form to be considered for a spot on a board.
