The Ditch Crew is an
integral part of the Public Works Department. Their crew leader, Jaime Boyd leads these men in most of the ditch maintenance
in the town. The Town of Newport has a contract with the North Carolina Department
of Corrections which supplies us with our labor. Their daily schedule is decided by the Public Works Manager and
while their duties are not limited to ditches, all of the approximately 30 miles
of storm water ditches within the Town of Newport are cleaned yearly and on an
as needed basis. Some of these ditches are cleaned by hand while the location of
others allows us to use machinery. We check and clean catch basins and drainage
tiles regularly after every rain to ensure proper drainage. We also repair
and install drainage tiles and catch basins all throughout the town. With the
addition of new subdivisions around Newport we are facing new storm water
